Oak Street Lost Its Buffet. Harkrider Street Gained a Gathering Spot.

Golden Corral closed its doors at 814 E Oak St. on July 8, 2026, ending its run as one of the biggest sit-down chains anchoring downtown-adjacent Conway. Three weeks later, on July 30, Las Delicias cut the ribbon on a new location one block over at 714 Harkrider St. Nobody planned the timing. But set side by side, the two events say something true about what's actually happening to downtown Conway's food scene this year: the big buffet-style anchors are stepping back, and small, walkable gathering spots are stepping into the space they leave behind.

If you live near downtown, you've probably noticed both changes on their own without connecting them. Here's what actually happened, what's opening next, and why so much of the activity downtown is timed to a Friday night that's probably already on your calendar.

Oak Street's New Empty Storefront

Golden Corral's Oak Street location closed for good on July 8, according to Arkansas food press that covered the closure the same week. Oak Street isn't just any downtown block. It's the same street where Conway Art Walk sets up its standard outdoor vendor booths every first Friday, the ones organizers call "Standard Oak St. Booths" in their own event planning materials. One night a month, cars give way to folding tables and local artists. The other 29 or 30 days, it's a working commercial strip, and as of July 8 it has one fewer anchor holding down foot traffic on the nights nothing special is happening.

What Moved In on Harkrider

Las Delicias already had a location on Old Morrilton Highway before opening its downtown shop with a ribbon-cutting on July 30. The family-owned dessert business told Arkansas press the new Harkrider Street space was built to be a place where families, students and visitors can sit down together, not just grab something sweet and go. The menu runs through gelato, handcrafted paletas, churros and mangonadas, the kind of stop that works equally well as a five-minute treat or a slow evening downtown.

A few miles away on College Avenue, Cinnaholic has spent most of the summer promising Arkansas food outlets it will open this August at 2125 College Ave. That line has now run in weekly food roundups since late June without a confirmed date attached to it, which says as much about how small openings actually unfold in a growing town as it does about the shop itself. It will open when it opens. Huey Magoo's is also confirmed to be in development somewhere in Conway, though no address has been announced yet.

The Corridor Two Miles Away Is Playing a Different Game

Not every opening this year has been about foot traffic. Waldo's Chicken & Beer opened earlier in 2026 at 2205 Dave Ward Drive, in the former Volstead Proper space directly across from the University of Central Arkansas. The company's market partner told local press the location was chosen specifically for its drive-thru and catering potential, built for students and commuters moving along Dave Ward rather than people who parked once and plan to walk block to block.

That's the split worth understanding if you live in Conway right now. Dave Ward Drive is filling in with drive-thru, catering-forward concepts built for people passing through on their way somewhere else. Downtown's Harkrider and Oak corridor is filling in with smaller, sit-and-stay concepts built for people who already parked for something, usually the Art Walk.

The Night That Explains All of It

Conway Art Walk runs the first Friday of the month, March through November, skipping May to make room for Toad Suck Daze. The 2026 season opened March 6 under a "science of art" theme and marked its Independence Day week with a July 3 "America 250" theme ahead of the country's semiquincentennial. Following the established first-Friday pattern, the next one lands September 4.

For themed nights, organizers close Chestnut Street between Oak and Van Ronkle to create what they call the Creative Cove, a pedestrian zone where vendors and activities take over the road. Rogue Roundabout, the brew lab at 804 Chestnut Street, served as the event's featured Entertainment District partner when that designation launched in 2025. The district lets attendees carry a drink bought from a participating business like Rogue Roundabout from one storefront to the next for the length of the Walk.

"We love partnering with other local businesses and organizations to create new opportunities for Art Walk attendees," said Jennie McNulty, program director for the Creative Institute and Art Walk, when the district first launched.

That's the mechanism. A monthly event already shuts down a downtown street to cars and turns loose a crowd carrying drinks between storefronts. A dessert shop built as a gathering space fits neatly into that crowd. A drive-thru chicken window two miles up Dave Ward doesn't, and was never trying to.

What's Actually on the Calendar This Week

If you're deciding what to do with the next few weekends, here's what's confirmed:

  • Friday through Sunday, August 28 to 30: the Bella Rustina Modern Vintage Market takes over the Conway Expo and Event Center, with vendor booths inside the climate-controlled hall.
  • Monday, August 31: Rogue Roundabout hosts a Bingo Night on Chestnut Street benefiting the United Way of Central Arkansas.
  • Saturday, September 26: the Conway Farmers Market wraps its 2026 season. This is the market that's run out of Antioch Baptist Church's parking lot on Amity Road since 1960, not the smaller listing near Main and Parkway that sometimes gets confused with it. If you want fresh produce before the season ends, Saturday mornings from 8 to noon are the window.
  • Friday, September 4: the next Conway Art Walk, back on Chestnut and Oak, with downtown businesses extending their hours to match.

What This Actually Tells You

None of this means downtown Conway is losing restaurants. It means the kind of restaurant that makes sense downtown has changed shape. A single large buffet chain needs a steady stream of sit-down diners seven nights a week to justify its footprint. A dessert shop built as a gathering space only needs a few genuinely good nights, and downtown Conway now hands it one guaranteed crowd every month by closing a street and handing out drink permissions to everyone who shows up.

If you already live near Harkrider or Oak, you probably didn't need a roundup to tell you where to get dinner tonight. What's worth knowing is why the block keeps quietly reshaping itself underneath you, and it has less to do with any single business succeeding or failing than with a monthly Friday night that has become downtown Conway's actual engine.

Capital SIR keeps close watch on exactly this kind of shift in every Central Arkansas community we serve, from downtown Conway to the neighborhoods across the river. If you're curious what a changing block means for your own property or your next move, schedule a complimentary market consultation whenever you're ready.
